Orcs, Barbarians, Gold, Druids, Potions, and die rolling; this sounds like it could be the making of a new fantasy RPG, but in fact it’s even cooler than that 🙂

At the heart of many childhoods was a toy filled with infinite possibility for the expression of one’s own imagination. LEGOs represent one of the most cherished toys of our youths, and for many of us our adult lives as well. From the original basic building blocks, to a large video game franchise, and even comics, LEGOs continue to permeate our lives decades after their innovation. Yet even with such an extensive toy oriented empire, LEGO is continuing to find new and interesting ways to entertain us.

Within the last few years LEGO has been extensively experimenting with a new product line called LEGO Games which are a collection of Board Games that you literally build. I could write a series of segments on each of these beautiful games (and I might), but there’s one branch of these games that has thoroughly snagged my attention this year. LEGO is now delving into the realm of not just Board Games, but Role-Playing oriented Board Games.

Enter HEROICA.

Heroica is a LEGO board game with very strong RPG elements. Like a board game the characters roll dice and move across the board towards their intended targets. Like an RPG however the characters come in a variety of classes, each with their own unique special abilities and appearances. There’s Gold to be collected, which can be spent on buying items. A selection of different weapons is offered up each with their own unique attributes. There’s even potions in four different flavors!

If you’re an RPG geek with young kids, this might be the perfect way to introduce them to the wonderful world of slaying orcs 🙂
