Monday Meanderings hopes to break up the Monday Morning Monotony by bringing you a quick run-down on notable things occurring in the various geek sub-cultures at large.

The Battle of Blood and Ink: A Fable of the Flying City
One of the original members of The Yachting Club has done something many of us dream about. He’s written a graphic novel and this past week it was published! With illustrations by Steve Walker this graphic novel details the adventures of Ashe, a streetwise girl raised in the flying city of Amperstam, as she uncovers the secrets of the city while evading those that would seek to stop here. See our article on it here.

Diablo III
Tomorrow Blizzard releases a game that has been twelve years in the making. I could probably write an entire article about the history of Diablo 3’s development (and maybe I will) but for right now I think it’s best to focus on the present. Starting at 11:01am EST today folks whom have digitally pre-ordered will finally be able to install and troubleshoot their games. At 3:01am tomorrow (May 15th) the servers will open up and folks will finally be able to buy the boxed copies and log in to Sanctuary to square off against the forces of the Burning Hells once more. I got to play the Beta briefly and I am very excited 🙂

The Avengers
Congratulations are in order for the Avengers for joining the Billion Dollar Movie Club. They broke a new record this weekend for having the highest grossing second weekend ever with $103 million, which was enough to also catapult them over $1 billion worldwide; A feat that has only ever been accomplished by eleven other movies in history. Marvel has certainly spent a lot of money and a lot of time ramping up to this film and to me it’s nice to see it all pay off in the end. So congratulations once again to The Avengers 🙂

Dark Shadows
Dark Shadows premiered this past weekend with a gross of $28.8 million dollars ($65.5 million worldwide). Reviews have been mixed to negative with some people loving it and slightly more feeling quite disappointed. Most agree the acting and character backgrounds were great but the consistency and direction of the story are haphazard as if the movie couldn’t quite make up its mind on what kind of movie it wanted to be. Regardless, if you’re a Johnny Depp or Tim Burton fan you may want to see the movie just based on visuals, but unless you’re a die hard there’s probably no harm in waiting until the DVD/Netflix release.

Diablo III
Next week Blizzard is releasing the highly anticipated sequel to Diablo II. Servers go live on May 15th. See you in Hell 🙂

The Avengers
The weekend premier of The Avengers broke the record for highest grossing opening weekend in North America with a total take of $200.3 million. That beats the previous record set by Deathly Hallows Part 2 by just over $30 million. So Kudos to The Avengers! Get out and see it if you haven’t yet 🙂

Dark Shadows
In other movie news, Dark Shadows will be premiering this week on the 11th. It’s a Tim Burton adaptation of a popular supernatural soap opera from the late 60’s and early 70’s, starring Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins.

Avacyn Restored
Avacyn Restored was released last Friday. If you’re a fan of Magic: The Gathering be sure to drop by your local gaming store and provide some patronage by picking up a few packs 🙂

Apr 202012

Nearly twelve years ago Blizzard released Diablo II, and work began almost immediately on developing Diablo III. After over a decade the game is almost about to hit store shelves, so it seems like life can’t get any better for Diablo Fans. Then this morning Blizzard invited everyone to play an Open Beta for this weekend only, and suddenly life got a little more savory.

That’s right, this isn’t a Closed Beta (which ends on May 1st btw), but an open one. Anyone whom has registered a Battle.net account (it’s free) and created a BattleTag (also free) can go to their Account Management screen and the section under games and download the Beta client on to their computer to play this weekend.

The Beta will run from Today, April 20th starting at 3:01 p.m. EST, and will end on Monday, April 23rd at 1:00 p.m. EST. The client is already available for download. Heads up though, the Beta is a little over 15 Gigabytes, so be prepared for a long download.

The full details of the event can be found on Blizzard’s Diablo 3 site.

Big Bang’s Big Guests
In case you missed it, The Big Bang Theory recently aired two episodes in which some pretty big guest stars made cameos. Leonard Nimoy made voice-over appearances in “The Transporter Malfunction”, and Stephen Hawking has a brief cameo in “The Hawking Excitation”. Although the episodes have already aired, it’s still momentarily possible to catch both episodes online at CBS.

Darkness Falls, Heroes Rise
For the next five weeks Blizzard is hosting a launch event on their website to hype the release of Diablo III, including opportunities to snag some exclusive content.

EUReKA! Premier April 16th
The Season Premier of the 5th and Final Season of EUReKA! airs on Monday, April 16th, at 9pm EST.
