Monday Meanderings hopes to break up the Monday Morning Monotony by bringing you a quick run-down on notable things occurring in the various geek sub-cultures at large.

This week’s Monday Meanderings is a little short. I’ve been engulfed by the fever to slay demons courtesy of Diablo III’s release amongst other distractions.

Battleship Sinks
I don’t think there was any real doubt in anyone’s mind on whether Battleship would score a Hit or a Miss at the Box Office. Even though Movie Critics aren’t always reliable in gauging the popularity of a movie with audiences, I think it was safe to assume we’d need a handful of White Pegs for this movie. The waters were turbulent enough for creating a movie based on the classic boardgame, but to throw aliens in to the mix it would likely have been far safer to forgo any connection to the game at all and just try selling a Navy vs. Alien Invasion action film. For a movie that cost $209 million dollars to produce, it only grossed $25 million the US’s domestic box office. Luckily for Universal and Hasbro it’s managed to eke out $240 million in worldwide sales (someone somewhere likes it) but it’s doubtful that once all the international distribution costs are tallied that Universal will consider this gamble to have been worth it.

The Avengers
Outpacing Battleship in sales by 2 to 1 easily was Avengers which topped $55 million domestically in its third weekend. It looks like it’ll do very well this Memorial Day weekend and is poised for very good early summer sales.

MiB3
Almost ten years after Men In Black II, and fifteen years since the debut of the movie franchise itself, Men In Black will release it’s third major motion picture. Agent J must time travel back in time to save his partner Agent K and as per usual the fate of the world rests on his shoulders. Is it me or Agent J now the one in danger of being “the Old Guy”?

Diablo III
Blizzard released Diablo III last week and there was no small amount of disgruntled fans as the game’s log-in servers (the servers that processed the log-in requests, not the ones running the game) were so overloaded that many folks weren’t able to get through during the first day and a half of gaming. There were also a couple spots where the game’s servers themselves had to come down for maintenance. This resulted in pretty bizarre rankings on Metacritic were the Reviewers were giving the game a quality ranking of about 88 out of 100, while the score from Users was ranking an average of 3.7 out of 10 based primarily on the coupled issues of not being able to access the servers and the inability to play the game offline solo. Still, apparently hundreds of thousands of users were still able to access the game and server downtime disappeared mostly by the end of the week allowing most folks to get on and play without issue. As a Blizzard veteran whom remembers the release of WoW, I’m personally counting my lucky stars over how smoothly this launch has gone. What were your impressions? Leave a comment below!

For those that want to keep track of Diablo III’s servers status, especially with the release of the Real Currency Auction House tomorrow (which has separate servers for each currency) Blizzard has posted this handy dandy server status page for your convenience.

Also to the right side of the page is a list of upcoming events and releases. If you know of something geeky and noteworthy that should belong there or have a suggestion for something to post on Monday Meanderings please let us know!

The Battle of Blood and Ink: A Fable of the Flying City
One of the original members of The Yachting Club has done something many of us dream about. He’s written a graphic novel and this past week it was published! With illustrations by Steve Walker this graphic novel details the adventures of Ashe, a streetwise girl raised in the flying city of Amperstam, as she uncovers the secrets of the city while evading those that would seek to stop here. See our article on it here.

Diablo III
Tomorrow Blizzard releases a game that has been twelve years in the making. I could probably write an entire article about the history of Diablo 3’s development (and maybe I will) but for right now I think it’s best to focus on the present. Starting at 11:01am EST today folks whom have digitally pre-ordered will finally be able to install and troubleshoot their games. At 3:01am tomorrow (May 15th) the servers will open up and folks will finally be able to buy the boxed copies and log in to Sanctuary to square off against the forces of the Burning Hells once more. I got to play the Beta briefly and I am very excited 🙂

The Avengers
Congratulations are in order for the Avengers for joining the Billion Dollar Movie Club. They broke a new record this weekend for having the highest grossing second weekend ever with $103 million, which was enough to also catapult them over $1 billion worldwide; A feat that has only ever been accomplished by eleven other movies in history. Marvel has certainly spent a lot of money and a lot of time ramping up to this film and to me it’s nice to see it all pay off in the end. So congratulations once again to The Avengers 🙂

Dark Shadows
Dark Shadows premiered this past weekend with a gross of $28.8 million dollars ($65.5 million worldwide). Reviews have been mixed to negative with some people loving it and slightly more feeling quite disappointed. Most agree the acting and character backgrounds were great but the consistency and direction of the story are haphazard as if the movie couldn’t quite make up its mind on what kind of movie it wanted to be. Regardless, if you’re a Johnny Depp or Tim Burton fan you may want to see the movie just based on visuals, but unless you’re a die hard there’s probably no harm in waiting until the DVD/Netflix release.

Diablo III
Next week Blizzard is releasing the highly anticipated sequel to Diablo II. Servers go live on May 15th. See you in Hell 🙂

The Avengers
The weekend premier of The Avengers broke the record for highest grossing opening weekend in North America with a total take of $200.3 million. That beats the previous record set by Deathly Hallows Part 2 by just over $30 million. So Kudos to The Avengers! Get out and see it if you haven’t yet 🙂

Dark Shadows
In other movie news, Dark Shadows will be premiering this week on the 11th. It’s a Tim Burton adaptation of a popular supernatural soap opera from the late 60’s and early 70’s, starring Johnny Depp as vampire Barnabas Collins.

Avacyn Restored
Avacyn Restored was released last Friday. If you’re a fan of Magic: The Gathering be sure to drop by your local gaming store and provide some patronage by picking up a few packs 🙂

Guild Wars is Seven Years Old!
The in-game celebration for Guild Wars is still ongoing 🙂

Darknes Falls, Heroes Rise
Blizzard is unveiling the Wizard this week as the last class for the launch event leading up to Diablo III’s release. The Wizard is your typical too-cool-for-school renegade in Diablo III. They also finally released the TV ad for it.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists
The Pirates! Band of Misfits made its premier last week on the 27th.

The Avengers
On May 4th The Avengers finally hits theatres and I’m expecting a Hulk Smash Hit (giggle). Considering how much has gone in to all the movies leading up to this one I truly have high expectations for it.

Avacyn Restored
Also, Avacyn is released this Friday as part of Friday Night Magic. The latest expansion for Magic sees the freed angel Avacyn returned to fight back the tides of darkness that have been mostly unchecked in the last two expansions.

Hmmm, there’s something important about today? Oh yeah. Taxes are due 🙁

Admittedly, thanks to Patriot’s Day the deadline for submitting your taxes to the IRS has been pushed off for another 24 hours, so if you’ve been dawdling then I suggest you hop to it and get it done now.

Hopefully taxes won’t leave you too tapped out this year. Get it? “Tapped” out? *snicker* whatever.

Darknes Falls, Heroes Rise
Blizzard is in to its third week of its special launch event for Diablo III. Each week giving us a run-down on one of the five character classes as we run-up to the release date. If you plan on playing Diablo III then consider stopping by their website for some exclusive in-game banner designs.

EUReKA! Premiers Tonight!
The Season Premier of the 5th and Final Season of EUReKA! airs tonight at 9pm EST.

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists
Heads Up Matey! The latest cinematic adventure from Aardman Studios is due out April 27th here in the States under the moniker The Pirates! Band of Misfits. I guess Americans don’t know what Scientists are anymore than they do Philosopher’s Stones.

Also, we’ve added to the right side of the page a list of upcoming events and releases. If you know of something geeky and noteworthy please let us know!

[EDIT/UPDATE 4:11PM] Oh! This just in! There’s a wonderful Kickstarter project called Velociraptor! Cannibalism! It’s a stupendous game developed in part by J.R. Blackwell, the Yachting Club’s founder! Please consider heading over to their Kickstarter Page and contributing some support 🙂
