Games come in all flavors. Coincidentally, so do velociraptors. Or at least we think so. One way to know for sure though is to start chowing down. So to find out here’s a game tender enough to sink our teeth into.

Designed for 3 to 6 players, Velociraptor! Cannibalism! is a combination board and card game about trendy Velociraptors whom adapt and mutate to meet their surivalistic, dietary, and fashionable needs by eating lots of cute animals and sometimes even each other. The Mutations and the Combinations thereof can be quite hilarious.

But why take my word for it? Let the Raptors tell you themselves.

Currently the game is asking for contributions Via Kickstarter to help pay for the extensive artwork a game like this requires. We highly encourage you to drop by and consider giving some support so that these Stylishly Mutating Raptors can have the spotlight they need to entertain you.

Hmmm, there’s something important about today? Oh yeah. Taxes are due 🙁

Admittedly, thanks to Patriot’s Day the deadline for submitting your taxes to the IRS has been pushed off for another 24 hours, so if you’ve been dawdling then I suggest you hop to it and get it done now.

Hopefully taxes won’t leave you too tapped out this year. Get it? “Tapped” out? *snicker* whatever.

What’s Friday the 13th without a little bit of… F E A R ?

Luckily, I’ve got a handful of fear filled treats for you my friends.

THE SECRET

Dark Horse has teamed up with Geek & Sundry to bring us a variety of motion comics. Basically, the artwork of the books has been animated to a certain degree and voice overs added so that the comics are essential cartoons that retain their original graphic novel ‘feel’. This can be a sort of hit or miss proposition for some comics, but The Secret is a wonderful example of just how good it can work when done right.

Meet Tommy. His life is on the fast track to awesome. He’s graduating High School, ready to attend college, and has a hot girlfriend who’s completely into him. All that changes when a childish party prank leads to a disaster that tears to shreds his life and the lives of those around him. He’ll fight and claw his way to find answers and set things right. Suspense is the flavor of this frightful saga.

There are four total chapters in this comic with the first one presented above. The other three can be found here:
The Secret: Chapter 2
The Secret: Chapter 3
The Secret: Chapter 4

Next, something for Manga Enthusiasts.

THE ENIGMA OF AMIGARA FAULT

The Enigma of Amigara Fault by Junji Ito is a 32 page Nightmare. I mean that with loving praise. If you love horror, especially the unusual and unconventional kind, then this story may be right up your alley. It’s a quick read and is a stand alone story, and after reading it I felt truly unsettled which for me is the mark of a good horror story.

The story begins after an earthquake rips through Japan, and in one mountain range the fault line has exposed a previously buried ledge wall of rock with… unusual… stone formations that stretch for miles. After television crews broadcast images of the ledge wall hundreds of Japanese citizens begin hiking into the mountains to see it for themselves.

Why would hundreds of people hike into the mountains to see a wall of rock? You’ll have to read to find out.

SPIRIT CAMERA: THE CURSED MEMOIR

And last but not least, Nintendo has released a new game for the 3DS. A japanese horror augmented reality game which is a spin-off from the successful Fatal Frame series. For me this is a pretty terrifying concept. Japanese Horror games in 2D are frightening enough, but 3D???

Even worse, this isn’t just 3D but augmented reality so your own real world will be portrayed as haunted as well. You’ll be playing the game and suddenly ghosts will be floating out of the walls that you live in. You can even take pictures of your real life friends, and watch them become vengeful spirits in the game, hunting you through your real world surroundings. Yeah. That won’t make things awkward at your next gaming session. :p

Here’s a delightful little live action promotion for the game from the fine folks at Nintendo:

Well that’s it. I hope your world is a little more… uneasy… this Friday the 13th 🙂

There’s arguably nothing more important than family. Perhaps though we should be asking ourselves just what constitutes “family”. In the lawless days of the Old West one had better have a strong grip on the ties that bind family together lest one finds too late that the binding has frayed away. Few know that lesson better than Boyd.

Cow Boy follows the comedic yet heartfelt adventures of Boyd. A bounty hunter aiming to collect on some very notable criminals. It’s tough enough surviving in the Old West while hunting down dirt-bags, but especially so when you’re just 10 years old.

Cow Boy

Give Boyd his due though. This webcomic’s humor revolves heavily around two facets. 1.) This boy is fulfilling a role that is solidly adult in nature. 2.) Folks perpetually underestimate Boyd because of that fact. Let me tell you there are few things funnier than seeing a crooked law man get out-smarted by a 10 year old.

Artistically the comic is beautiful. Drawn in a style reminiscent of “Calvin & Hobbes”, each page is thoughtfully composed to detail not just the setting of each scene, but also the flow of character on character interaction. The artwork easily portrays the thoughts passing through each character’s mind, even when there’s no supporting dialogue.

Behind the comedy though is a well thought out story, and every chapter leaves us thinking. We don’t just live in the moment with Boyd, but regularly find ourselves wondering about his past and future. We don’t just contemplate and theorize on what events have led him to his current circumstances, but we also wonder with some margin of trepidation about what consequences his future holds as well.

So please, take a few minutes out of your day to drop by the Old West and follow the tales of Boyd the Cow Boy.

Orcs, Barbarians, Gold, Druids, Potions, and die rolling; this sounds like it could be the making of a new fantasy RPG, but in fact it’s even cooler than that 🙂

At the heart of many childhoods was a toy filled with infinite possibility for the expression of one’s own imagination. LEGOs represent one of the most cherished toys of our youths, and for many of us our adult lives as well. From the original basic building blocks, to a large video game franchise, and even comics, LEGOs continue to permeate our lives decades after their innovation. Yet even with such an extensive toy oriented empire, LEGO is continuing to find new and interesting ways to entertain us.

Within the last few years LEGO has been extensively experimenting with a new product line called LEGO Games which are a collection of Board Games that you literally build. I could write a series of segments on each of these beautiful games (and I might), but there’s one branch of these games that has thoroughly snagged my attention this year. LEGO is now delving into the realm of not just Board Games, but Role-Playing oriented Board Games.

Enter HEROICA.

Heroica is a LEGO board game with very strong RPG elements. Like a board game the characters roll dice and move across the board towards their intended targets. Like an RPG however the characters come in a variety of classes, each with their own unique special abilities and appearances. There’s Gold to be collected, which can be spent on buying items. A selection of different weapons is offered up each with their own unique attributes. There’s even potions in four different flavors!

If you’re an RPG geek with young kids, this might be the perfect way to introduce them to the wonderful world of slaying orcs 🙂

Let it never be said of me that I don’t care about my fellow human beings (or elves, or dwarves, gnomes, vampires, cylons, etc…). The world we inhabit can be full of remarkable dangers (such as drow, iron dwarves, underpants gnomes, twilight, Megan Fox, etc…). No matter who we are though, we all have one common thing to fear.

Zombies.

The moment the dead start walking around you can bet your IQ score is suddenly going to become synonymous with Nutritional Labeling. On top of that we’re faced with the unfortunate truth that once a Zombie Outbreak occurs it is already too late to plan for it. So to ensure you can survive an apocalypse of grey matter munching undead it’s essential you get prepared before it happens.

To help facilitate this essential preparation I present you with this Nifty Tool.

www.mapofthedead.com

Utilizing the technological power of Google Maps, the “Map of the Dead” website helps you assess which areas of your local geography are high risk for zombie encounters, as well as important locations to avoid (such as medical facilities) and locations which might be useful to hit up for supplies (like hardware stores). Using this tech you can set some priorities for where to grab essentials and where to hide out.

Give it a look see, and find out how much danger you might/possibly/could/will be in.

In 2011 Skyrim swept through and captured the hearts of millions of gamers across the globe, earning near-perfect marks from almost every major critic in the industry. Yet the most telling exclamation of the game’s success is its instant engraving in the sub-culture of geekdom at large. Evidence of which also exists in the musical score of the game itself.

These past few months I’ve been treated to many videos of Lindsey Stirling and her almost hypnotic capability to engage our interest in an instrument largely forgotten amongst subcultures enthralled with traditional Rock and Roll formulas. Her talent with the violin is incredible, but her charm is the quality that elevates the experience as a whole. Combining her music with creative dance moves she exudes a level of cheerful awe and wonder. Quite often her videos take us to fantastic outdoor vistas; from ice castles to forested hillsides. All the while she ups the ante with playful costuming, once including herself in a Link outfit while playing away the theme to Zelda.

Peter Hollens career grew career grew out of the a capella scene, and the mastery he wields over the talents of his voice are evidenced in this latest work. He deepens the Skyrim experience through use of his voice as more instrument than lyrical expression, and elevates our immersion in the game’s thematic sound.

Together these two artists provide a rich audible and visual treat through their musical talents combined with choreography set against a landscape of snow capped hills and stone castles.

Wil Wheaton brings us a surprisingly delightful twist on board game reviews and web-based television through his new show, Table Top.

When I first clicked this link I was mired in a few layers of doubt.  The clip length read as 30 min.  Half hour TV shows aren’t even a full thirty minutes due to commercials, yet somehow I was expected to buy in to the premise that Wil Wheaton could deliver to me a 30 min segment in which he and three other celebrities would introduce us to a single board game… without getting bored (no pun intended).

I love Wil Wheaton so I decided to at least chisel off five minutes of my life to see if he could hook my interest, and by the time those handful of minutes were up I had been thoroughly snagged.  He reeled me in slowly, and when at last I realized that half the segment was over, I was already wishing it could be longer.

With new episodes coming out every other Friday on the brand new geeky website “Geek and Sundry”, it feels as if I’ll be breaking my life down into two-week segments of eager waiting as I anxiously look forward to each new episode of this delightful web-show. Due out April 20th is Episode 2, Settlers of Catan, and I can’t wait to see him and three more of his compatriots delve into the wonderful past time of board games 🙂
